EPS Batch Pre-Expander With Fluidized Bed Dryer

What is an EPS Pre-expander Machine

The EPS pre-expander machine uses steam to expand the expandable polystyrene beads. The amount of steam and the heating time determine the density of the raw material. The pre-expander is designed to produce consistent density and prevent agglomeration of the foamed beads. A high-quality EPS pre-expander machine has a number of features that help it achieve its goals. These include intelligent density control, a closed expansion chamber and a pressure sensor control technology.

The Common Types and Features of EPS Pre-expander Machine

EPS Batch Pre-expander Machine
EPS batch Pre-expander is a new type of Pre-expander that can be applied to EPS production lines. Batch type EPS Pre-expander is functioned to expand EPS raw material to required density. Material filling and expanding is done batch by batch. It has the ability to reduce the amount of material needed for a given output, leading to lower production costs. This technology is especially useful in cases where the final product must meet certain specifications, such as low weight or low volume.
Features:
Batch Processing
In a batch Pre-expander, EPS beads are processed in sealed steam chamber. This allows for precise control over the amount of steam and heating time applied to each batch. Operators can adjust these parameters for each batch to achieve the desired density, resulting in greater control over the final product.

Uniformity
Batch processing ensures that each batch of EPS beads is treated better uniformly. The beads in a single batch have consistent characteristics, such as size and moisture content, which makes it easier to control the expansion process and achieve a consistent density.

Customization
Batch Pre-expanders offer more flexibility to customize the expansion process for different EPS products. Operators can fine-tune the machine settings to meet specific density requirements, whether for packaging materials, insulation, or other applications.

Density Testing
In batch processing, it's common to sample and test the expanded EPS beads from each batch to verify the achieved density. This quality control step allows for adjustments if the density doesn’t meet the desired specifications, ensuring a higher level of accuracy.

Less Continuous Variability
Due to fluctuations in feed rate, steam, or other factors, batch processing can reduce density variations. It is easier to control and adjust the expansion process in real-time.

EPS Continuous Pre-expander Machine
The EPS Continuous Pre-expander machine is a new and improved way to expand polystyrene (PS) products. It uses a continuous stream of pressurized hot air to evenly expand the product, making it more durable and less likely to tear. The machine also has a high expansion ratio, which means that it can produce larger pieces of PS than other pre-expanders.
Features:
Automation
All process including filling, expanding, sieving, de-lumping and conveying work automatically.

Continuous Operation
EPS continuous Pre-expander machines are designed for uninterrupted operation, allowing for a continuous production process. They are equipped with a feeding system that automatically supplies EPS beads to the expansion chamber, ensuring a constant flow of material.

High Expansion Ratio
These machines are capable of achieving a high expansion ratio, typically ranging from 50 to 100 times the original volume of the EPS beads. This results in lightweight and low-density expanded foam with excellent thermal insulation properties.

The Benefits of EPS Pre-expander Machine

Tips for choosing Batch EPS Pre-expander Machine
  • Know the different types of machines. There are two main types of EPS machines, namely, the automatic and semi-automatic machines. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.
  • Consider the capacity of the machine. The capacity of the machine should be able to accommodate your production volume. If you have a small business, a semi-automatic machine may suffice. On the other hand, if you have a large-scale business, an automatic machine would be ideal.
  • Consider the features of the machine. The features of the EPS pre-expander will determine its efficiency and productivity. Some features to look for include automatic loading and unloading system, foam density control, temperature control, and others.
  • Consider the price of the machine. The price is usually determined by its features and capacity. Compare prices from different suppliers before making a purchase.

How to Use EPS Pre-expander Machine
  • Remove the sundries in the cylinder in advance and open the air valve and steam valve.
  • Prepare the raw materials and press the conveying button. Set the feeding amount, set the weighing switch to the automatic position, set the counter to the required number of times, confirm the time set in each step, and wait for the signal that the material is full
  • Turn on the fan and screening machine, set the selection button to automatic, press the pre-heating button for 6 minutes, and then according to the set number of times of pre-expander the machine will automatically repeat the pre-expander process.
  • When the last operation is over and the weight of the remaining raw materials in the cylinder is insufficient, turn the switch to semi-automatic mode, press the "Remaining pre expander" button, and the remaining materials will be pre-expanded within 5s, which is shorter than the last process.
  • This switch is only effective within 50~300s after the previous operation. If it exceeds this range, it shall be operated manually. Stop the machine in the fully automatic mode, clean the cylinder manually, and remove the beads left in the pre-expander cylinder. Close the main steam and air valves and cut off the power supply.

Key Factors Influencing the Curing Speed of EPS Pre-expander Machines

Cooling Rate
Heat from the expanding foam is distributed to surrounding mediums like air, water, or other cooling agents through various heat transfer methods. While the surface of the foam might cool and solidify quickly due to its poor heat conduction, the core often remains at a higher temperature. If the foam is considered cooled at this stage, the residual heat from the core can cause surface temperature elevation, leading to potential deformation or breakage. It’s imperative to ensure adequate cooling and curing time. While high-intensity cooling equipment can enhance productivity and reduce costs, an overly rapid cooling rate, especially for polymers with significant shrinkage rates, can lead to structural issues in the foam.

Gas Separation from the Melt
As bubbles expand, gas separates from the melt and enters the bubble. This separation increases the melt viscosity on the bubble wall, accelerating the solidification process.

Blowing Agent Decomposition and Vaporization
The foaming process involves stages like gasification, gas partitioning, and expansion. When using chemical blowing agents, their decomposition can either absorb or release heat. The crystallization process in polymers is typically exothermic. All these elements collectively influence the foam’s curing rate.

What are the Precautions of Using EPS Pre-expander Machines

Even though a fine EPS Pre-expander is automatic and reliable, there are still precautions that are needed to keep in mind.
Firstly, in the case of a sudden power failure, the EPS Pre-expander will automatically close the steam valve, open the material door and compressed the air valve to cool it, so that it can prevent the foam material in the barrel from condensing into agglomerates. If you want to discharge the raw materials in the barrel, you can use a blower or compressed air to blow out the foam material in the barrel, and then separate them according to the actual situation of the foam material.

Secondly, when the machine needs to enter the barrel for maintenance, it is necessary to cut off the main power supply and set up a dedicated person to monitor it. After the maintenance is completed, please strictly check the remaining tools and parts in the barrel. Otherwise, the ventilation plate and rotating bracket at the bottom of the barrel will be damaged.

Thirdly, in the production process of the machine, please strictly prevent the foreign matter mixed in the EPS material from entering the foaming barrel to avoid damaging the bottom ventilation plate.

Fourthly, in the production process, the machine operator must pay attention to the sensitivity and reliability of the electric contact pressure gauge. If a problem is found, the electric contact pressure gauge must be repaired or replaced in time to ensure the normal and stable production of the machine.

Last but not least, when inspecting and maintaining the machine, remember to turn off the power to avoid personal accidents.

How to Check EPS Pre-expander Machine
  • The appearance of EPS Pre-expander Machine should be uniform, no exposed primer, good paint film adhesion, no flow marks, wrinkles, and slight paint damage.
  • The plating of the equipment's electroplated parts should not peel, demold, rust, etc
  • The opening and closing of the warehouse door should be flexible.
  • Supply power to the switching power supply of a single device multiple times and observe whether it can start normally and whether there are abnormal noises.
  • In functional test systems for other materials that are difficult to clean by stirring and pumping cement, water is usually added as a solid rather than a test material. The solid materials used in foam test systems should be foamed in a dilute aqueous solution of foam. The size of the sprayed capsules should be uniform.
